The project

You have forty people to thank and about a week to get it done, and the options in front of you are a gift card, a fruit box that looks like every other fruit box, or something you have to assemble yourself. None of them say the thing you actually mean, which is that you noticed the work and you are grateful for it.

Dutch Country Gift Baskets is an Amish owned family business in New Holland that builds gifts out of Lancaster County meats, cheeses, snacks, and sweets, and ships them across the country. When we photographed them last year they were mostly a Christmas company. A year later the catalog runs all twelve months and it has grown well past baskets, into gift boxes, crates, coolers, tool gifts, and cheese samplers, with two new collaborations we shot for the first time this round.

That growth is why they brought us back. When someone spends a few hundred dollars on a cooler packed with food they have never tasted, from a company they found ten minutes ago, the photo is doing almost all of the convincing, so it has to show the whole thing honestly and make it feel worth sending.

What the photos had to carry

Merv and Jalen and the crew had already done the hard part, which is building gifts that hold up when the lid comes off. The harder job on our end was making a single frame carry what the person opening the box actually feels.

Online, one gift basket looks a lot like the next one, and you cannot tell from a grid of thumbnails whether you are sending eight pounds of good local food or a lot of shredded paper with three things buried in it. That uncertainty turns into a quiet worry that the gift will land flat, and that the person will open it and think you grabbed the first thing you saw. And that is the part worth pushing back on, because the people you are thanking are usually the ones who kept the year from falling apart, and they deserve better than something pulled off a shelf.

So the shoot was built around showing everything. Every product faces the camera with its label readable, the contents stack so you can count them, and the props stay real, with actual fruit and linens on an actual table instead of a white sweep. The point is that the photo shows the gift at the size and the fullness it actually arrives in.

A consistent look across the catalog

The whole catalog was shot against one stone backdrop with warm, low, directional light and a linen table, and that consistency is doing real work. Every product on the site now sits in the same room, so a thirty dollar cheese sampler and an eight hundred dollar cooler feel like they came from the same company, and next year’s additions can drop into the same set without the store looking patched together.

The two new collaborations got the same treatment. The Breeo pit is Lancaster County steel filled with Lancaster County food, and the Bevanda coolers and tumblers carry the Dutch Country mark, so both were shot to read as one gift rather than a product with snacks sitting on top of it.

Behind the scenes

Every one of these was lit and styled on site with the team, one set at a time, with Jalen and Merv building each gift the same way they build the ones that ship. That is part of why we go to them instead of having product mailed to a studio, because the people who know how the gift is supposed to look are standing right there.

The images run across the product pages, the email sends, and the ads, which is why the whole catalog was shot in one visual language rather than piecemeal across the year.

05Want one of these

This kind of work fits a product company whose catalog is growing faster than its photo library, where the pictures are carrying the sale and there is no one on staff keeping up with them.

Book a discovery call and tell us what you sell and who is buying it. We plan the shot list, style the sets, and shoot the full catalog on location with your team. You walk away with a library that works on the product page, in the email, and in the ad, and it still matches when you add products next season.
